Mackenzie is a half vampire teenager who hasn't, so to speak, gone through vampire puberty. Her best friend Kristy loves to hang out at Mackenzie's house because her parents are so cool and such interesting things happen. Unfortunately Mackinzie doesn't have that rose-colored view of her parents. They keep embarrassing her with their supernatural ways. The worst time of year is Halloween, the vampire is high holiday, when the entire supernatural family comes to visit. Even worse, Mama always insists that Mackenzie wear the most macabre costume possible.

This year is no different than any other except that it's her last year in school. She desperately wants to wear something glamorous, something normal. And that means sneaking past mom, who will have her supernatural radar out since all the relatives will come a-calling.

Shaunda Kennedy Wenger has written one of the most delightful middle grade books I've come across in a long time. Its people are bizarre and yet believable. From Mom herself, who I like a whole lot more than Mackenzie does, to Mackenzie's witchy aunt and addled vampire uncle who rarely gets out of his crypt, to the distant relative that arrives as a marble statue, Wenger amuses and surprises us. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I'm an adult. I highly recommend it to anyone of any age, but be assured that it's also totally suitable for reading to young children.

Reality Bites Tales of a HalfVampire Shaunda Kennedy Wenger 9780615614298 Books Reviews

I chosen this because my mom wanted me to read about it and the introduction on the back
And I really love this book
A cute story about a normal girl growing up in a very abnormal family. Not too preachy, and with a likably unlikeable main character - Mackenzie is precisely as whiny and self-centered as a junior high girl should be, and with the right amount of distaste for what's normal in her family and pining for a "normal" life. That's what made the story most enjoyable - the utter verisimilitude of the pre-teen main character. It's a bit of a fluffy little froth otherwise, but the idea of a vampire's daughter pining to be a normal kid, dressed up as a mermaid princess for Hallowe'en, is a delight.
I read this book, and it was perfect, for a 13-year old. I want people to know that it's not one to try to read as an adult. But if I were 20 years younger- totally! )
The story is written from the perspective of a young person on the cusp of becoming a teenager. I found the depiction to be spot on as it caused me to visualize the situations with that thought in mind. I found myself smiling while reading this short story.
Reality Bites, Tales of a Half-Vampire is the story of a twelve-year old girl who has the most embarrassing family ever. REALLY. You think you have it bad? Mackenzie's mom is a VAMPIRE, which means that Mack can kiss any hope of fitting in goodbye. All Mackenzie wants is to go to the Halloween Ball as a beautiful mermaid, but when your mother is a vampire and you have a family full of ghouls and hundred-and-seventy-five-year-old witches, you have to honor your heritage and dress as something dead for Halloween--or so the Queen Mother Vampire says. And you kind of have to listen to your mother when she can literally kill you. But how are you supposed to find a boy to dance with when you look like you just crawled out of your uncle's crypt?

Though Reality Bites is clearly written for a middle school audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this book at the age of 19. Packed with amusing tween angst and eccentric characters who would indeed be very embarrassing to have as family members, this new vampire novel stands out from the scores that have come before it. I highly recommend Reality Bites to middle school students and anyone who has ever felt exasperated by the antics of his or her family.
It's tough being a teen, especially when your mom is the Queen of the Vampires. Mackenzie Bonapart just can't get her mother (and the rest of her family) to understand why she wants to go to the Halloween dance as a princess. The family rule is you must look dead on Halloween. It doesn't help that her best friend thinks Mackenzie's crazy family is cool! This great book contains lots of humor - spells that go wrong and relatives that make members of the Addams Family look normal - and yet all of us can understand Mackenzie's struggle to fit in somewhere. A great book - lots of fun - give it a try!
This is truly a vibrant story written by Author Shaunda Kennedy Wenger. It is a perfect young-adult novel that teens will thoroughly enjoy. Mackenzie, almost 13 years old, and in the 7th Grade, is the daughter of Queen Mother Vampire...a true vampire who always inspires her daughter to dress appropriately for Halloween. Mom's definition of 'cute' is blood, missing body parts, skeletons, and even a dead Minnie Mouse! Mackenzie thinks of herself as a mutant since she has no fangs and no inclination to fly or taste blood. She appears to be no different from her school classmates. She often wonders how and why her father, who is not a vampire, would marry one. Mackenzie truly believes her mom is the weird one--not her! Trouble comes when Mom plans a true haunted house comprised of many weird vampire relatives, open to the public. It will conflict with Mackenzie's plans of attending the school's Halloween ball. This story is a fun read, ideal for young teen-aged girls. The writing style is easy to read and well edited, with the dialog popular for teens today.
