Like so many others who have given this a one or two star rating, I have to agree, this story was atrocious! I struggled with it and kept coming back to the five star ratings here to push me to finish it. The plot of the story was fine. It was the painfully over-long story-telling and the emotional repetitiveness. There was really no Denny and Kiera in this story other than the setup. *Spoilers* Denny and Kiera move to Seattle because he lands a dream internship at a prestigious firm and she is lucky enough to receive a scholarship at the local college there, as well. They move into a house with his friend Kellan Kyle, who is the vulnerable lead singer in a rock band, who has never been loved - aww. (Well, I loved him!) They get settled in and right away, Denny is given an assignment in Tucson for what was supposed to be only two months. He starts calling Kiera less and less and she becomes more and more lonely, turning to Kellan for companionship which then leads to more, but doesn't become physical until Denny calls to tell her they want him to stay on in Tucson for two more years and he has agreed to stay. She can't leave to join him because she's got a job and the scholarship. So she breaks up with him. At this point Denny becomes just a premise of a boyfriend, a prop to give Kiera someone to cheat on. I related completely to her initial heartbreak over Denny's choice, then getting drunk in her sorrow and "using" Kellan, whom she was growing close to in Denny's absence. This didn't bother me - it could happen - her heart broken, she's in the house with someone she is already growing close to, who is immensely attractive and who is obviously feeling the same way about her. She's under the influence and I can see them going for it under the circumstances. But then Denny gives up his once-in-a-lifetime internship, and rushes back to Seattle the very next day because he loves Kiera so much (she is his heart) and couldn't bear the thought of losing her. But she has already become addicted to Kellan, and vacillates back and forth wanting Denny, then Kellan, Denny, Kellan and on and on and on, chapter after chapter. She was one of the most fickle characters I've ever read and I didn't like her at all. And, OMG, she cries all the time! For the most part, all Denny's character does is work at a job he hates and sleeps, which is extremely convenient for Kiera and Kellan as she is able to sneak down Every. Single. Morning. to feed her fix, her "close" time with Kellan, where they hold hands, hug, kiss, etc. while Denny...sleeps. She shows very little emotion towards Denny unless she is feeling guilty, but she can't let him go because she doesn't want to hurt him...because she still loves him. Yet, she is hurting him every time she cheats on him with Kellan, he just doesn't know it yet. The scene where she leaves her bed with Denny after he falls asleep and sneaks into Kellan's room, directly across the hall, for a muffled, all-nighter and stays with him until nearly dawn then crawls back in bed before Denny wakes up and cuddles him. Ewwww!
There are some really good moments in this story, most of them around Kellan's character and his emotional, heart-wrenching vulnerability. The scene where Denny finally "catches" them, how he responds and the subsequent emotional backlash was a "I can't put this book down" moment.
Lastly, what made this book Titanic for me was the author's extreme over-use of the words "cheek(s)" and "tear(s)." I mean seriously, I was cringing every time I saw them used throughout this story. In fact, I used my app to search for each of the words to count how many times the author used them. Cheek(s) 231 times; Tear(s) 225 It was annoying and distracting to the story with the repetitive use of these words in "every" emotional scene and believe me the story is comprised of one emotional scene after another. Enough already!
I bought this in search of a cure for my Beautiful/Walking Disaster hangover. It’s good, but nothing like I was trying to replace. First off, I hated Keira. Hated. God she’s awful. Whiney, needy, constantly contradicting herself between “I’m so innocent” and “I’m a cheating whore.” Second, The amount of time her character “blushes” drove me insane. At least 100 times. At least. You’d think the author could think of other adjectives besides “I blushed” 50 thousand times. Keira blushes at the mention of sex but she had sex w both guys at the drop of a hat? And the development of the “friendship” between Kellan and Keira was just weird. Not normal. Super fast and awkward. People don’t act like that. I needed a bit more character development with that friendship before it got all R rated.
Oh but Kellan...I did like him. I found his reactions & emotions- anger, frustration, acting out as revenge, to be quite normal considering the situation. That damn girl strung him along, it was awful.
Towards the end of the book, I did like Keira a tiny bit more. Maybe cuz she suffered. Whatever.
Bottom lime, the book was good, you’ll probably enjoy the tug and pull of your heartstrings. Not sure if I’d read the second book though.
But first one was worth the read.
Why do we read romance novels? For the fantasy of being desired and adored by a man who is everything we want in a lover. In turn, the heroine must be deserving of his love and adoration and always do right by her man. But what if she doesn't? What if she is Kiera? Now, I like to read about flawed heroines, but Kiera pushed all my judgmental buttons. First of all, she was so ridiculously clingy. She was sobbing--sobbing!--when she had to be separated from her boyfriend for two months. She was supposed to be twenty-one, but she often acted like a fourteen year old who reacts like it's the end of the world when something doesn't go her way.
Next we have the cheating. I was actually okay with that at first, but then she kept wavering between the two guys so much that her indecisiveness got on my nerves. I would have had more respect for her if she had just admitted to herself that she wanted both guys. I could have handled her selfishness much better if she hadn't been so clingy and annoying. She was constantly crying over having two hot men in love with her. I know that's insensitive of me, but Kiera's behavior had me rolling my eyes a lot.
On the plus side, her sex scenes with Kellan were smoking hot. I finally understand why readers will overlook ridiculous heroines or plots if they are into the love interest. Christian Grey didn't do it for me, but he did it for millions of other women. I get it now.
I didn't, however, rate it five stars only because of Kellan. As I got further into the book, I realized how different it was. This is not something that I've read before. In every other book with cheating, it is justified with the heroine's boyfriend being abusive or a cheater himself. Not here. Denny is a genuinely loving and faithful boyfriend. Kiera has no valid excuse for cheating on him. She just succumbs to her lust for Kellan. Then she tries to fight it, but she reaches new heights of ridiculousness in this section of the book by constantly cuddling with him while she is supposedly wanting to be just friends. Of course, she succumbs to lust again. She really becomes maddening when she realizes that she is in love with him but can't bring herself to let go of Denny. Talk about frustration for the reader! No wonder so many of them hate Kiera.
Here's the thing though. There are lots of people like Kiera in the world, both female and male versions of her. This happens every day in the real world, so this is one of the most realistic romance novels I have ever read. People have affairs, sometimes for years, without ending their current romantic relationships. It's not easy to leave someone you've been with for years, and it's even harder to admit that you've betrayed them. That doesn't excuse it or justify it either, and the author wasn't trying to do that. She chose to unflinchingly tell this story and show all the selfishness, bad decisions, cowardice, and hurt. I give props to this author for not writing the same old romantic fantasy.
